Ask Yourself This

Just ask yourself who would spend a lot of money on ads making fun of spending just $3 million to do research on wild bears, when the United States spends $700 BILLION in Iraq every few months?

Mining corporations, that's who! Often we taxpayers pay to build roads in the wilderness so that they can strip mine the land. They strip off all trees and other plants, causing massive erosion and landslides, block streams and rivers, and pollute the air and water with toxic substances.

They make the land ugly, cause the deaths of animals and plants, and destroy property values for miles around. And they use (and pollute) massive amounts of water, often in places where water is already scarce.

What is worse, often the chemicals that are used in mining and the "tailings," the discarded rocks and dirt, are so toxic and/or radioactive that they cause high levels of birth defects and cancer deaths for many miles around the mines.

Why are they allowed to do that? Because they contribute millions of dollars to political campaigns. In return, the mining companies get back BILLIONS of dollars in tax cuts, subsidies, free (or nearly free) access to national forests and native tribal lands.

They count on us not to think about what they are doing to the Earth and what they are stealing from the rest of us---our heritage, our health, and sometimes our lives.

Prove them wrong! Be smart. Help make the world safe for bears---and for all of us.
